Relay for Life – Workskills JogActive

Relay for Life

During the weekend of 25th and 26th February Workskills participated in annual Relay for Life event to raise awareness and funds for the Cancer Council in the Derwent Valley with the team name Workskills JogActiveThis was initiated by Senior Job Search Consultant at New Norfolk and taken on board throughout the organisation.

Workskills Corporate made a financial contribution as did all who registered and other friends and family.  A free dress day for staff donations was also held prior to the event.  In all, $1500 was raised for this worthy cause with 25 participants.  Participants were from Workskills New Norfolk and Bridgewater sites and corporate office predominantly along with friends and family.

The relay involved constant walking on a track at Tynwald Park from  the opening ceremony at 2pm on the Saturday 25th February until 10am Sunday 26th February 2017.  A baton was handed from participant to participant and required to keep moving throughout this entire time. There were of course more participants during the day and into early evening (which was fantastic) with the night time proving the most difficult with some brave souls braving the extreme cold and tiredness, with some cat naps in between.

Two of our participants are survivors of cancer and participated in an inspiring survivors and carers lap.  There was also a moving illumination ceremony honouring those who have lost their cancer battle.  Although extremely tired and sore, we all felt that the cause was such a worthwhile one as we were able to communicate with other community organisations, families and politicians throughout the event.
