Practical Work Experience Success!

Work Experience Wins

George relocated from Victoria to Tasmania a couple of years ago to enjoy a change in lifestyle and found it difficult to get regular work. He was seeking opportunities in a range of areas and had extensive experience in the hospitality industry. However without support and local contacts George was only securing intermittent work.

George’s situation took a turn for the worse which ended up in him and his partner living in a tent out of town reliant upon public transport with limited employment prospects and opportunities.

George engaged with the Hamlet Café as a volunteer to update his skills, share his experience and to gain local references through engagement in practical work experience. Workskills received rave reviews about George’s engagement with the Hamlet Café. This resulted in George meeting with a Workskills Employer Services Officer who introduced him to a local café owner. George commenced working as a Café Assistant where he was able to demonstrate his skills.

George now works both front of house and back of house, prepares food, serves customers and performs as a barista. His employer relies on George and he receives more hours than the other workers in the Café. George now lives in a house, has regular hours and supports both himself and his partner through paid employment.
