Kickstart Arts – ‘Art for the Dole’ Activity

Kickstart Group

Workskills were proud to be part of an innovative Work for the Dole Activity, designed to create a large mural in a public car park with the desire to influence driver’s behaviour in order to save the lives of our much prized iconic animal – the Tasmanian Devil.

From August 2016 to January 2017, Work for the Dole participants were engaged with local artist Jarmin, in all aspects of the design, creation and final unveiling of the artwork.  The artwork incorporated digital interactive elements so drivers, via a mobile phone app, can engage with the artwork and explore the impact of their speed on road kill, particularly of our Tassie Devils.

Participants who completed a survey at the end of the Activity could not speak highly enough of the project and the new skills they had learned.  As well as the artistic, graphic and technical skills participants acquired, the project also had benefits for improving individual’s job readiness such as this participants response:

“It has helped me understand my limitations that I impose on myself and helped me overcome these through working as part of a team and with feedback from the co-ordinator”.

Workskills are very proud of our participants who attended regularly and committed fully to the tasks which were asked of them, and wish to congratulate all involved in this wonderful project.

Of particular excitement for us is that 20% of Workskills’ job seekers on the Activity gained EMPLOYMENT while undertaking the Activity!!
