Building Skills Course

Objectives:

  • To run an industry training course, informed by consultations with employers, which provides participants - all long term unemployed job seekers – with hands on training, in a ‘real work’ environment. Participants will gain skills to work effectively in the construction, fabrication and joinery industries. There will be an emphasis on OH&S and real-life work situations, including work culture, risk assessment and management, communication, problem solving, self management and team work.
  • To work with employers and community service providers to provide a real-life work environment for participants. Training will largely be at Pete’s Shed – a community run Men’s Shed – in Bridgewater as well as with other employers in the Building Sector.
  • To work as a team to develop skills and knowledge to build a complete, sound structure which can be sold on the open market.
  • To teach participants Employability Skills which will enhance their prospects of gaining employment or undertaking further training and participating in community opportunities.
  • To provide an opportunity for more disadvantaged long term unemployed job seekers to have exposure to work culture and practical experience in a work environment.
  • To build confidence amongst employers that Job Services Australia job seekers can meet their needs.
  • To meet the skills shortages which exist amongst local employers in the construction, fabrication and joinery industries.
