Transition to Work Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of support will I get from the Transition to Work Program?

We are here to help set you up for success in the world of work and everyone’s journey with us is unique. You’ll get your own coach who will help you set goals; prepare for work; gain skills and qualifications; get experience; get the right clothes and equipment for work; land that first job or get started in your dream career.

Does it cost?

Nope. It’s completely free.

Can you help me get a qualification?

We sure can. We can help find the right training for you and may also be able to pay for you to complete it.

What kind of young people do you help?

We help a wide range of young people aged 15 – 24 from all walks of life. Generally, the young people we work with are looking for a little extra help on their journey to work. They might have finished school early or have been struggling to find work for a long time. We do have some strict eligibility criteria to access the program. You can talk to our team to find out more or take the quiz below.  Whatever your story, we’d love to help!

What qualifications do your staff have?

Our Coaches have a range of qualifications and work experience. We have team members who have worked as chefs and hairdressers and others with a background in community services and counselling. Their qualifications range from CERT III right through to Masters Degrees. All Coaches are trained in Coaching and Mental Health First Aid and undertake ongoing professional development. We reckon it’s the team’s diverse work and life experience that helps us get such great outcomes with young people.

What happens when I get a job?

Well first thing is that we get super excited for you! Then we keep helping you out for up to 6 months to make sure all goes well. We can work with your employer too if that’s needed. Remember, we can help with things like clothes, transport, training and equipment to get you off to a good start in your new job.

I am a bit nervous about talking to new people, how can I contact you?

You can always start by texting us on 0487 888 109 or emailing us at transitiontowork@workskills.org.au.  At some point, we will need to talk to you to find out if you are eligible for the program which is a bit hard via text (we promise we’re not too scary!).

I have finished school and need a job, who can help me?

There are a number of great services around Tasmania that can help you. If you are eligible for Transition to Work then we would love to help you on your journey. See the Jobs Tasmania website for info on other services that might be able to help.

How do I know if I’m eligible?

You can complete the quiz below and leave your number for us to get in touch. You can also give our friendly team a call on 6262 5400 or email us at transitiontowork@workskills.org.au.

How long can I get help for?

If you are eligible for the service we can help you for up to 18 months any time until you turn 25.

What will I need to do if I sign up?

To start with, you’ll need to show up to meet with your Coach at one of our sites and keep in contact with them along the way.  Your Coach will start by working with you to set some goals and make a plan to get you work ready. You’ll then need to put in the time and effort to achieve those goals. That might mean getting some driving practice, doing some training, getting mental health support, volunteering or working. We’ll be aiming to get you participating in these activities for around 25hours a week.

Do I need to be on a Centrelink Payment to get help from Workskills?

No you don’t. If you are eligible for Transition to Work, you don’t need to be on any form of payment. Once you start with us, we can help you apply for a payment if that’s what you want.

What information do you have for parents?

Our team are really happy to talk to parents about the support we provide. Feel free to give us a call or shoot us an email with your questions!

I’m an employer. How do I connect with young jobseekers?

Hi and welcome! Our Employer Services team would love to help you find just the right young person for your team. Here at Workskills we work with more than 1000 young people along with jobseekers of all ages and can connect you with other supports like wage subsidies. Learn more here and contact our team today on 6262 5400 or employerservices@workskills.org.au.

Can I get help if I am still at school or studying?

Unfortunately, you probably can’t get our help while you are studying. If you finish up at school, or if your school helps you to formally move over to Transition to Work, then we may be able to help.  You can ask your school about this or contact our team for more information.
